Deepening Roots
I wish I were not so old
For my life has already surpassed that of a house fly
At least 278 times over.
If I had been born a redwood
My silky leaves would be stretching
Far up into the heavens beyond
Dark rings circling my insides.
Years of schooling will soon be over
The monotony of adulthood
Will consume my soul
Smother the child who danced in daisies
The years of fairytales and pirate ships
Abandoned to a simple memory.
If I were to go ice skating
My stumbling legs would cautiously totter
One blade assigned to each foot
The sun would set
I would drink hot cocoa
Reminiscing about past adventures
Grasping how incredibly long these feet have balanced
On the slippery rink of life
And I would still sit
Fighting the urge to turn and run
Wishing that I was not already so very old
